Featuring Haleh Abghari (voice), Laurie San Martin (composer), Chris Froh (percussion); with Dana Harel (set design).
Laurie San Martin and Haleh Abghari are joined by percussionist Chris Froh to present a new work inspired by Farid al-Din Attar's 12th century poem, "The Conference of the Birds." Haleh Abghari and Laurie San Martin began collaborating on this project while in residence at the Lucas Artists Programs at Montalvo Arts Center, where they were joined by visual artist Dana Harel.
Composed with a new musical and theatrical form of storytelling for voice, percussion, and computer processed sounds, the performance - by Abghari and Froh, joined by the Empyrean Ensemble - draws on Korean pansori and Iranian traditional music, as well as bird songs and Western classical music. The story follows a group of birds who venture through extreme challenges to find a leader. Aspects of the original story are woven together with other stories in a satirical and dramatic show.
