This series of conversations is inspired by James Duval Phelan’s participation in the San Francisco-based Chit-Chat Club. Founded in 1874, members met monthly for dinner followed by a presentation and discussion. These talks will explore key topics central to Montalvo’s ongoing mission and plans for the future.
Lucas Artists Residency Design Fellows, Scott Barry and Neil Doshi, and Montalvo’s Associate Curator, Donna Conwell, discuss the process of curating O’ Great Reverie: Montalvo 1912-2012. This talk will explore the challenges of working with archival material and historical narratives, and examine the expanded field of design in which designers are increasingly approaching their work as a conceptual practice rather than simply a service industry. This conversation is moderated by California College of the Arts Adjunct Professor of Graphic Design, David Hisaya Asari.
