Rock the Garden July 20
in celebration of new
Sculpture on the Grounds!
Performers at last summer's
Sculpture on the Grounds opening party.
Join us on Friday, July 20, at 7pm, for Rock the Garden! It's a summer party celebrating our
Centennial year and the opening of our 2012 Sculpture on the Grounds, with music, live performances, food, drink, and spectacular multidisciplinary works of art!
The event will feature newly-commissioned installations throughout Montalvo's grounds, including:
- Daniel Canogar's large-scale video piece, Asalto, will be projected on the facade of the Villa.
- Robin Lasser's Edible Dress Tent will be fully installed on the West Lawn. The sculpture will stand over 20ft tall and incorporate edible flowers, herbs, and fruit-bearing plants to be harvested for Montalvo's culinary program.
The newly-restored Belvedere
is the starting point for
Kianga Ford's sound piece.
- Sound artist Kianga Ford will present a downloadable audio piece which will function as a guide for guests on Montalvo's hiking trails, starting from the beautiful and newly-restored Belvedere.
- Many other sculptural works will be on the grounds; walking tours of the art will be offered.
Montalvo Historical Fabrications and Souvenirs (A Pop-Up Shop) will hold its closing reception and blow-out sale in the Project Space Gallery throughout the evening! Join artist duo The Marianas* as they offer a variety of playfully fictional "historical artifacts" produced in the gallery and for sale to the public.
Our brand new Creekside Studio will also debut at this party! Located across the entrance road from the Lucas Artists Residency, this newly-commissioned space will house classes, educational programs for kids, art works, and other public arts activities. Join us as we showcase this unique space!
Montalvo Members are invited to join us from 6-7pm for a reception in the gallery and on the grounds prior to the party. If you're not already a Member and would like to gain access to this exclusive reception as well as other great benefits, click here and join today!
The evening will also include live music on the Great Lawn, food trucks, beer & wine, and more surprises! This evening of art, food, and fun is FREE, so save the date! RSVP on our Facebook page here.

May 25: Beth Custer Ensemble performs live original music to silent film My Grandmother
The Beth Custer Ensemble
Join us on Friday, May 25, at 8:30pm, in the beautiful outdoor Lilian Fontaine Garden Theatre, as the Beth Custer Ensemble performs a live original score to the silent film, My Grandmother.
This 1929 Russian movie is a satirical look at the Soviet state system and uses innovative early film techniques from puppetry to stop motion animation in order to tell its story. Custer's original score is a quick-paced pastiche of jazz, blues, classical, and folk music. Her 8-piece ensemble will perform the score and provide narration live as the film is projected on the big screen. To read an interview with Custer about her work click here!
Arrive early, at 6pm, for Final Fridays with visual & sound artist Mamoru Okuno. Okuno's "etudes" explore the art of the ordinary as he employs objects such as plastic wrap, hangers, ice, and instant noodles to generate a visual and musical experience. Final Fridays are FREE and open to the public!
Tickets to My Grandmother are $20 for general admission, $15 for Members, or $8 for students. Click here to purchase online today, or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday. Tickets will also be available at the Box Office on the day of the performance.
